Sherman’s journey to the 2026 NCAA DI Outdoor Championships

This season has been an impressive one for Sherman, a Texas Tech University junior.

The 21-year-old sprinter, who made his Olympic debut in 2024 with the Liberia men’s 4×100 meter relay team, recently ran a 9.99 (+2.5 wind) season’s best. He followed that performance with a 10.14 (+1.2 wind). These times are also his new personal records.

Sherman ran both times at the NCAA Division I West First Rounds. He had the second fastest time in the prelims, and seventh fastest time out of all heats, securing his spot at this week’s championships.

Besides competing at the last Olympics, Sherman is a member of the 2024 African Games men’s 4×100 bronze medal winning team.

This year, Sherman currently leads Team Liberia’s men’s 100 meter runners with the fastest legal time of the season.

Nabwe is the woman to watch

Nabwe is one of the newer members to the Liberia National Track & Field Team, and already she’s made her mark.

Since joining Liberia Track & Field last year, the University of Minnesota junior has set numerous records in the hammer throw and shot put, making herself one of Liberia’s most accomplished field athletes. She’s thrown further than any Liberian man or woman on record.

According to her university’s website, Nabwe “posted the No. 2 all-time NCAA hammer throw mark of 75.72m (248-5)” in April at the Drake Relays. She’s currently ranked as the sixth best woman in the world for the hammer throw.

Naturally, she is Liberia’s national record holder in the women’s hammer throw, blowing away an almost 10-year-old record set by 2007 team member Tetee Kuyateh (54.47). Additionally, Nabwe’s hammer throw mark is further than the current men’s national record set by Dunstan Macauley (46.11m) in 1964.

When it comes to her performance in shot put, once again, her national record of 18.00m, set at the Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships last month, out performs any Liberian man or woman.

At the NCAA Division I West First Rounds, Nabwe threw 67.89m in the hammer throw and 17.09m in the shot put to secure her championship spot this week. She also holds Liberia’s discus throw national record at 59.58.

When and where to watch the 2026 NCAA DI Outdoor Championships

The men’s 100 meters preliminary race starts Wednesday at 6:25 p.m. local time. Sherman will run in heat 1, lane 4. His time will determine if he goes on to compete for the title. Nabwe will take to the field the following day at 2:30 p.m. PT, to begin the women’s hammer throw. She’ll start the shot put event later that day at 7:10 p.m.

Only two Liberian National Team members have ever secured NCAA outdoor titles. Two-time Olympian, and double African champion Joseph Fahnbulleh won the 2021 NCAA men’s 200 meter title, and the 2022 NCAA men’s 100 meter and 200 meter titles with the Florida Gators.

Additionally, Liberian men’s 4×100 meter record setter Akeem Sirleaf, secured an NCAA 4×400 men’s title with his North Carolina A&T team.

Now, fans are looking to see if Liberia will add more to this list.
