The 2022 Liberia Marathon has finally come and gone with many online pictures celebrating the event.

Go Team Liberia gathered some of our favorite shots from the major race, which took place on Sat. Aug. 21 in the nation’s capital—Monrovia. The competitive marathon brings both novice and professional runners together in the spirit of fun, competition, and unity.

Official results are currently posted online and show that 19-year-old Theresa Kargbo of Sierra Leone won the women’s full marathon, while Michael Bryant(37) from the UK won the men’s race.

Sierra Leonians swept the half marathon, taking all top three spots in the men and women races. Runners from Sierra Leone also placed first in the men’s and women’s 10k marathon.

It appears the crutches and wheelchair 10k race had mainly Liberian participants. Emmanuel Nyumah and Keymah Wolubah are the male and female crutches 10k marathon winners, respectively, while Moses Sackie won the wheelchair 10K.

Though all of the winners were impressive, simply running any marathon is an attempt worth celebrating. Charles Dorme Cooper, chairman of the board for Liberia Marathon shared that 1,741 people registered for the race and a little over 1,400 finished on race day.

According to Cooper, this makes the Liberia Marathon Liberia’s largest running event so far.

“We’re just thankful to all the sponsors and partners who made the race possible, and especially to the runners who participated,” Cooper told Go Team Liberia.

Cooper also shared that 15 countries other than Liberia registered. Below are some pictures that grabbed our attention and show the determination, pride, and camaraderie displayed at the 2022 Liberia Marathon. Watch the slide to view more of GTL’s faves.
