The 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo ended last week. From Sept. 13 to the 21, the world’s best track and field athletes competed at the Japan National Stadium. As Go Team Liberia reported earlier, Liberia sent three athletes to compete: Thelma Davies, Destiny Smith-Barnett, and Joseph Fahnbulleh.
Davies stood out among the trio, making it as far as the semi finals in both the women’s 100m and 200m events. Smith-Barnett and Fahnbulleh did not advance past the first rounds.
The team had a host of fans online and some supporters in the stands. Most notably, Liberia’s Deputy Minister of Sports from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, G. Andy Quamie, rooted for the athletes in person. At the end of the championships, Quamie posted several public messages congratulating the team on Facebook and Instagram:
“Our appreciation to Joseph Fahnbulleh, Destiny Smith-Bennett [sic] and Thelma Davies for representing our (Flag) Country at the 2025 Tokyo World Athletics Championships.”
The deputy minister also thanked the athletes’ parents, sponsors, Telfar brand, coaches, and GTL. Here is a recap of the championships.
