Today, one of Africa’s top track and field events begins. From now until Sunday August 5, The 2018 African Senior Athletic Championship will showcase Africa’s elite. While several teams remain stranded in Lagos, Nigeria, Liberia’s full four person team has arrived in Asaba.

Who to Watch

(L-R: Coach Sayon Cooper, Akeem Sirleaf, Otricia Borkuah, Wellington Zaza, Kadmiel Enders, Coach Bill Sheriff)
  • KADMIEL ENDERS

Enders won Liberia a gold medal at the West Africa Region II Senior Championship and ECOWAS Junior Tournament, last May. He will represent the country in the high jump event. According to the ASABA 2018 website, the men’s high jump finals will begin on day three—  Friday August 3— at 4:30 pm local time.

  • WELLINGTON ZAZA

Zaza wrapped up his 110m hurdle regular season with an impressive 13.67 (0 wind assist) record. This time puts him well beneath the ASABA 2018 entry standards, making him a serious medal contender. Zaza will represent Liberia on day three— Friday August 3 — at 4:40 pm local time in the 110m hurdles round one.

  • AKEEM SIRLEAF

Sirleaf ended his regular season on a high note as well. He  clocked in at a season’s best 20.95 seconds(+1.4 wind) in the 200 meters.  If Sirleaf performs at his personal best, Liberia has a chance to repeat the accomplishment from the 2016 African Championship  and medal. The men’s 200 meter round one begins on day four— Saturday August 4 — at 10:10 am local time.

  • OTRICIA BORKUAH

Borkuah represented Liberia in the women’s high jump at the 91st Traditional Boxing Day match in Freetown, Sierra Leone, last December. She will represent Liberia again on the final day — Sunday August 5— at 5:05 pm local time.

We wish everyone on the team a successful match. We will be rooting. Go Team LIB!
