On Thursday July 12, Liberian Heptathlete Maya Neal made an announcement. She will not join her team at the 2018 Senior Athletic African Championship hosted in Asaba Nigeria.

“Unfortunately I won’t be competing in African Championships to end my season. Sucks to end a great outdoor season like this, but I’ll be back better next year to make sumn shake [.] Thanks for all the support that the Liberian community and @libolympicblog has shown us, and I’m sure my teammates are gonna hold it down!!!” Neal wrote on Instagram.

Neal had a tremendous athletic season. This year, she set a new personal best and ranked high at several competitions. Due to a minor injury , Neal’s surgeon and team physician suggested she end her season early to make a full recovery.  She plans to come back next season and pick up where she left off.

Liberia still has two athletes scheduled to compete. Wellington Zaza will represent Liberia in the 110 hurdles. Akeem Sirleaf will represent in the 200 meters. Both athletes ended the regular season on a high note and exceeded entry standards.

The team still has wristbands for sale. These wristbands will help fund the trip. Supporters can purchase a wristband through email: immlegal@yahoo.com subject:’Go Team LIB’.

We wish Maya a full and speedy recovery. We also wish Wellington and Akeem much success at the championship.
